Field Day 2026 was a blast! The Pinecone Amateur Radio Club’s Field Day station was at Morrow Mountain State Park for the second consecutive year. There, Carl W8WZ and I operated continuously for the 24-hour period starting at 2pm EDT on Saturday in the 1-Bravo class, a two person portable station.

It all started because Field Day was cancelled. Due to the Corona virus and social distancing protocols the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society had to cancel our annual group Field Day effort in 2020. Instead, RARS encouraged each member to operate during Field Day from his or her own home.
…that costs less than $300, can be carried in one hand in a small duffle bag, is less than 3 feet long when taken down, can be installed and taken down in less than 10 minutes by one person, does not require guy ropes, can handle legal limit power, and offers more than 5 dB of gain.
The North Carolina QSO Party is a contest that Carl, John, and I look foward to every year. For me, it’s second only to Field Day, and a very close second.
